Reading and Eating are Perfect Together

My books are so often smeared with chocolate, stained with tea or spotted from the drippings of oily crumbs that I know I should be embarrassed, especially when the book is borrowed from work or a fresh copy from the library.

I can't say that I am embarrassed though, the joys of a solitary (or similarly book-bedecked companionship) meal with a good book are just too good to deny.

Thinking about this because of this, via James Tata.

When I was a kid, I signed out a library book about a bookworm, who was all offended because his book was returned to the library by a lender who ate grape jelly and fries and drank coffee and used messy ink...each page was illustrated as though soiled by one of these substances...and so, years later when I got a job in a bookstore, and shortly after that, the wave of café-bookstore combos swept the nations (Cda & USA), I was horrified...horrified! and simply couldn't shake the thought of a little angry bookworm, all bent out of shape over the wreck someone had made of his book...

...maybe he was angry because the messy kid who messed up the book didn't add anything tasty...perhaps the work was holding out for bacon bits, too!

I agree, mostly -- except -- it's so hard to keep books open with one hand! Therefore, I prefer to read magazines with meals, and save books for tea and jellybeans.
